Never. SiriusXM laid off the team of people at XM's R&D in Florida, who wrote the firmware.

Ryan, do you know of any new XM portable-radios coming out soon?

While I agree with you that the required subscription should be disclosed, I can't agree with the substance of your rant. There is no way that the RIAA, which can barely tolerate these recording devices btw, is going to let someone pirate a whole bunch of songs off of XM and then cancel their subscription and keep the music.
You can't pirate the songs off of XM, you can't store the format on an SD card, you can only store XM recorded material on the internal proprietary storage.

Pirating XM music was not what I was talking about. If I really wanted any of the music XM plays over the air there are much easier ways to get it than screw with this device.

I am talking about the disclosure and not being honest with someone that is shelling out a lot of money, and doing it on purpose. This is dishonest in the utmost and they should be made to pay a heavy price for it the same as John Q public would have to if they purposely kept something from a corperation or the government.

I want the player section of the device to work even if I can't get live music. I would bet that many people would not have bought this player if they had known this was the case. And, if I want to be stupid and not use the XM section, even though I bought a subscription, and just use it as an mp3 player, I should have that option since I shelled out the money.

To the RIAA, keeping the songs permanently on the XMP3 is pirating them.

I don't disagree with you about the lack of disclosure, but if XM wants to sell a device that only works if you pay for their service ongoing, they certainly have every right to do so.

If I bought the songs I should be able to store them and play them wherever I want to store them and play them.

Maybe I have not been clear here. The word "player" in the context that I am talking about is just the recorded music playback section of the device, mostly mp3's on an SD card, "radio" in the context that I am talking about is listening to live XM content, and "device" is the whole unit. With these definitions in mind, I am not talking about losing XM content if I don't pay for the service. My whole bitch is them shutting off the player when I don't use the radio for a period of time. They turn off the ability to playback any type of recorded music EVEN IF YOU HAVE AN ACTIVE PAID UP SUBSCRIPTION TO XM if you don't use the radio section after a period of time. This is just crazy.

I agree with you that you should not be able to get free XM without an subscription. But when you advertise something as an MP3 player in combination with an XM receiver, you should be able to play MP3's on it no matter if you have a freaking active subscription or not. If you can't they better freaking tell you about it. If I put an SD card in the device that is full of songs that I have purchased I should be able to listen to the music using the player section of the device no matter what. I would not have bought the freaking thing if I knew this in advance and Pioneer/XM knew people would not like this feature that's why they did not tell anyone about it.

I can't be deceptive in my buisness practices as John Q Public why should a big corporation be able to get away with it?

How hilarious to see Marker101 and Shabadoo and other deluded syncophants try to defend this piece of garbage known as the Pioneer XMP3. This unit keeps freezing and locking up, and gets absolutely zero reception on its portable antenna. No Unicode Character support AT ALL! UNACCEPTABLE! Its been how many years since the XM service was rolled out, and still no decent portable reception?? What trash. Its going back to old reliable mp3 players and podcasts for me.

Since the merger, the quality in channel programming and content has been remarkably decreased. What a disappointment. Honestly, who'd put up with this nonsense. Just get yourself a reliable MP3 player and chuck the rest of this garbage in the trash where it belongs. Cancel your subscription and say Good Riddance once and For All!!

Listen. I have an XMP3. It works fine. Mine isn't a "piece of garbage". Maybe it locks up once a month. Ooooh. Reset it and move on. I play live music and MP3's just fine. Something like the stubby antenna isn't an issue for me because I don't use it much portably, and when I do, I bought the antenna headphones.

Just remember one person's trash is a ton of other person's treasure.

Clearly you're better suited with an iPod, so go give your money to Steve Jobs and leave the rest of the happy XMP3 users alone.

Thumbs Up I've had to replace at least 2 defective XMP3's
but, they are NOT a piece of garbage, I enjoy it's portability very much...

I've had the XMP3 since it came out. I have had very VERY few issues with it. I get great reception with the built-in antenna while out walking. It sounds great, and I love it. It's a little slow accessing the MP3's I have on the micro SD card, but that's not even worth complaining about.
